Mixing It Up Mid Century Style

Love this art. Mix in some resin coated photography
"L.A. Fun" available thru Pal +Smith

One of my favorite pieces by Jean De Merry

Don't shy away from color! The butterfly hardware is so fun. A bright colored sidepiece in zesty lemon by Ralph Pucci will do the trick.

Dining room by Pal + Smith. An example of how to mix a room with bright colors, natural textures and vintage lighting for a modern and eclectic look.

Adding a little texture to a mid century look creates warmth and unexpected layers.

Loving Bright Colored Glass!

Loving Bright Colored Glass!

Glass has come a long way. I have been collecting vintage glass for years but the modern practice of glass blowing has truly become a unique and beautiful art form. Caleb Siemon, one of my favorite glassblowers has developed his amazing pieces into a colorful lighting line. Caleb's glass is a must for modern design. A unique vessel or a light fixture, all eye candy from a truly talented artist.

Modern Prairie Style

Modern Prairie Style

I am currently working on a new project fashioned after Frank Loyd Wright's Prairie School of style. Prairie style is organic in nature and emphasizes natural materials and textures. In this particular home, the design will be more modern vs traditional. As I started my research, this Craftsman home designed by Nickey Kehoe illustrated how Wright's principles can be applied in a modern and colorful way.

Welcome to the Jungle

Welcome to the Jungle

Spring is here and I love this piece. I recently acquired it for my personal art collection . Frida Kahlo has been very inspirational in my work. I have always gravitated towards her color palette and depth of subject matter. With a modern twist, Artists, Alex Getschen and Felix Meier collaborated on this photographic piece. It is an amazing theatrical recreation of Nickolas Muray's Frida on White Bench, New York, 1939.

Black, White and a Little Color

Black, White and a Little Color

Love these antique cameos featured in Departures magazine. Photographed by Horacio Salinas. Get this ancient look in a new modern way with Christian Lacroix's fabric collection for Designers Guild. This collection has an old world flair layered with vibrant accents of pink, lime green and and electric blue, featured in luscious silks and plush velvets.  My favorite is this circus style silk stripe, Soly Sombra in fuchsia. It would make quite a statement in a black and white room as drapery or pillows.

David Oliver's book Paint and Paper

David Oliver's book Paint and Paper
I love this book. It has great ideas for implementing inexpensive yet inspiring ideas for paint and wall applications. Modern to traditional, this is a good place to start.

In the spirit of creative wall applications, adding fabric to a bed niche is an inexpensive way to create drama. As seen in this colorful room, designed by David Kleinberg, featured in Architectural Digest June 2001. The matching duvet and crisp white surroundings add extra punch to a small space. Of course, Quadrille's toile de Jouy in lime green is a absolutely fabulous!

This intimate space is accented by a bold Asian inspired print by Cole and Son on a single wall.

White Walls

White Inspiration
Using white walls in a modern home can be colorful! The use of white walls acts as a canvas or a backdrop.  It allows you to be creative with art, wall coverings and finishes. My favorite white paint is Sherwin Williams Extra White. I use it on  every project.
This image is an example of colorful wall coverings with white walls.

A gorgeous fabric depicting a oval wreath. this fabric was created for the bed chamber of Louis XVI at the Chateau de Versailles.

In the spirit of Louis.
I recently came across the article "Sleepless in Manhattan" featured in Elle Decor while researching a project. Designer, Robert Couturier seamlessly portrays French style in a modern and historically inspiring way. The use of  French furniture ranging from Louis XIV to Art Deco and layers of bold  rich color are stunning. A must read article for anyone interested in French style with an eclectic twist!
